All staff who work with and support children, young people and their families/carers.

Before attending this course participants must have attended Safeguarding Children – A Shared Responsibility.

Course details

To raise awareness of the issues related to drug or alcohol use and the potential implications for the individual, family and society.
Additional Training following from this course includes: Hidden Harm: The Impact of Substance Misuse in the Family

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be able to identify a range of different drugs
  • Describe the impact of substances on children, young people and their families
  • Be aware of some of the reasons why people might use substances
  • Recognise some of the physical, psychological and social effects of drug use
  • Recognise some common drug paraphernalia
  • Consider different signs that may indicate problems at different stages of use
  • Be able to understand how to calculate alcohol units and be aware of the recommended limits for adults and young people
  • Develop knowledge and confidence to engage with children, young people and their families where substance use is a factor
  • Be able to identify and understand how to access the support available locally for children, young people and families affected by drug and/ or alcohol use
