All staff who work with and support children, young people and their families or carers.

Learning pathway

Before attending this course participants must have attended Safeguarding Children – A Shared Responsibility.
Substance Misuse: Drug and Alcohol Awareness is recommended.

Course details

This session will support staff in the identification of young people not necessarily seeking treatment, but who may be at risk of substance misuse problems. The aim of the course is to train staff to use the young people’s substance misuse pathway undertaking screening and brief interventions to respond early to a young person’s substance misuse preventing the need for more specialist services in the future

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to -

  • identify those at risk and know what the indicators of substance use are and the different stages of use
  • how to use the CRAFFT (a brief and valid questionnaire)
  • deliver advice and a brief interventions
  • use the cannabis, alcohol and MCAT toolkits
  • know the risk thresholds and when and how to make
